How does UK Universities compare with US Universities

How does UK Universities compare with US Universities?
I am looking at a few schools in the UK, well in London and one in Dublin, Ireland. They don't post GPA requirments or GRE test schools. THey post 1st degree honors, 2nd, and so on, and then pass. I am not in an honors program, but I don't know what this means. I was hoping someone with experience of UK Graduate Schools could answer and explain the process. Thanks.

The UK system does not calculate GPA per se. They still go by the standard grades though. Universities have their way(s) to calculate the overall grade to determine the type of honors you graduate with which also includes an honors project. First class is the highest honors followed by Second Upper, Second Lower and Third Class. The pass degree is as what it says just someone who just manages to pass to graduate. Because almost all degree programs in the UK are direct honors degree programs, graduating with a pass degree in the UK is as good as telling people one didn't do at all well in college. GRE is also not a common requirement for graduate program applications. GRE is a very American thing. Just follow the graduate admission application instructions of the universities you are applying to and speak with the program director or advisor. Each program will have its own requirements. Because most US applicants hold a non-honors BS or BA degree, you may only qualify for a Master's degree program by research. You can then articulate into the PhD program within the department.

US universities are ok i know nothing about uk im just answering this because my idiot sister is a gopher from ireland where cows $%^& on the windshields of cars and ducks roam to their liver's content and fry their abdomen yum.... oh, i must have digressed a bit
3 :
Most universities will take graduates on by a case by case basis, there are certain minimum requirements that will have to be met but they do not assure you entrance into the course. In Ireland education has been given a numerical scale 10 = PHD, 9 = Masters, 8 = Bachelor Honours and Graduate Diploma, 7 = Bachelor Ordinary, (Used to be called National Diploma) Bachelor Honours takes three to five years depending on the programme. You would have to check with the universities to confirm if what you have counts.

Living, working, and going to school in the UK

Living, working, and going to school in the UK?
I am an American who is currently being home schooled, I will be done in less than a year and would like to study in the UK if possible. However, in order for me to do so I have to have a job there and have to live there for at least a summer's length (3 months) I have done loads of research on my own for the past month or so, and am now overloaded with confusing information I can't make heads or tails out of. First of all, as a home schooled student is it even possible for me to go to school there? Second of all, where do I start looking? I have read everything I can about visas, and do not want to go on a school visa because of the work restrictions and the fact I'd have to prove I can study there without working (which is impossible unless I get some awesome loans/scholarships; and I do have a 4.0 which is all A's) Where do I look for a job or whatever else I need without actually going there? Is that even possible? Things like that. Thank you for taking your time to read this and an even bigger thanks if you chose to respond. Thanks ^^ I am also 17 (I'll be either just turning 18 or will be turning 18 soon when I graduate) lol sorry for leaving that out ^^ So how can I work and go to school at the same time? On a student visa you have to be able to go to school without working, and you're only allowed to work 20 hours a week. So I can't do that. And to be specific I am online with Ashworth University their high school college prep program. I am sorry but neither of those answer any of my questions lol

You don't say how old you are? If you are 16 or over then you can go to college but you may have to pay. To go to University depends on the course and you would have to attend an interview.
2 :
sadly your harsh evil goverment wont give you a student loan mwah howerevr id advise leeds jobs everywhere you look helathcare its free dont let us down !
3 :
Whether you can go to school here depends on what you want to do. A three year degree course? Something shorter? If you have taken exams I can't see that being home schooled would make much difference. If you want to take a degree course you need to be looking at British universities. There are hundreds of these and you need to narrow your search down to a particular geographical location. Universities are likely to be fussier about your qualifications than other schools and colleges offering diploma and certificate courses. They like to recruit overseas students because they can charge far higher fees. The following website has information on British universities and colleges: http://www.hero.ac.uk/uk/universities___colleges/index.cfm Regarding visas, the rules are here: http://www.bia.homeoffice.gov.uk/studyingintheuk/eligibility/ As you rightly state, you have to demonstrate you have funds to pay course fees and support yourself, but once in the UK you can work part time. Is there anyone who can at least lend you a sum of money to give a healthy bank balance? I would have thought any student loan would have to be sourced in the USA rather than the UK. There is also a new scheme called the Youth Mobility Scheme, though there are a number of conditions, such as whether the USA will participate. http://www.bia.homeoffice.gov.uk/workingintheuk/tier5/youthmobilityscheme/ To be honest, apart from the Youth Mobility Scheme I can't see any other way of legally working in the UK apart from a student visa. There is a list of different categories of work here: http://www.bia.homeoffice.gov.uk/workingintheuk/ Unfortunately it is unlikely you would get a scholarship or bursary. Scholarships are not a major part of the British college system as college fees are subsidised for home students anyway. Sorry if this sounds a bit pessimistic.

Medical School In the UK

Medical School In the UK?
I am an undergraduate student in the U.S. after my undergraduate education in America, I wanted to move to the U.K. and possibly go to medical school there because let's face it, healthcare in America SUCKS! however, i know the medical school system is different in the u.k. than in the u.s. after 4 years undergrad, is it possible for an American student to go to med school in the U.K. and if so, what are some worthwhile schools?

the system in the UK is that at 18 you go straight from school into a 7 year medicine course. as you have already done 4 years hopefully you can do a few less. you need to have a look on the UCAS website - very important. and for some really good universities look on the times and guardian newspaper university league tables. search by medicine, and you'll have a good idea of the best places to go. then have a look on those university's individual website. call to find out exactly what the procedure will be for someone in your position. figure out whether you want to go to a campus university like st andrews or warwick, or a city based one, like ucl or imperial in london. do you have the money to study in london or in the surrounding area? its expensive.

Two: Lower and Upper Sixth Form. I think this can also be referred to as "college". If you look at this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Education_in_England#School_years, you can see that 15 is the common age for Year 11'ers. So you'd just be slightly younger than average. Which is perfectly fine.

What are some differences between school in the US and school in the UK

What are some differences between school in the US and school in the UK?
For my creative writing class, I have to write a story that takes place in a different country. I live in the US and my story takes place in the UK. I would like to know some differences between school in the US and UK. Even if you just describe high school in the UK, that would be great. How many hours does it last? How many days a week do you go? Things like that. PLEASE, for the love of God, do not tell me to google it or do my own homework. I've done research on many other aspects of life in the UK, but I've been having a hard time finding information on schools. Thanks!

1 :
I think schools in the US are more lenient because all the schools I know of are strict (I'm from the UK btw). I don't think we have the typical stereotypes and segragation that they cause (in the US), most people get along with everybody. We call it secondary school here and the first year is called Year 7 when you're 11 (we don't have "grades" like you do in the US) and then we leave when we've finished Y11 and we're 16. We never have to re-do a year if we screw up an end of year test, we always just move onto the following year. We get GCSE tests when we're in Y10 and Y11. It lasts from ten to nine till half three. We go five days a week; all the weekdays. We do English, Maths, Geography, History, French, RE, PE, IT, Citizenship and a DT (I do textiles). We have a tutor who leads our tutor group but we don't have them for any lessons, they just take us for registration on the morning and look out for our emotional welfare. Oh and we call them headteachers not principals. I hope I've been of help :) x Oh yeah I forgot the things that teh other answerer said. Yeah we have a strict uniform code at our school, which consists of a Burgundy jumper, black trousers/skirt, white shirt/blouse and a burgundy black and yellow striped school tie. The tie is compulsory for both boys and girls. And we're not allowed any piercings or make up. And we have to have orthodox (neat and tidy) normal hairstyles. And we either eat packed lunches or get something from the dinner hall, which at our school we don't refer to as a cantine but I think they do at other schools in England. And if you're in Y 11 you are "a year eleven" not "an eleventh grader". Oh and we have to stay in isolation if we do something wrong or do not have the correct uniform (for example wearing trainers in lessons or trying to wear clothes in PE that are not part of our school PE kit. We can get excluded (kicked out of school) for serious offences like repeated truancy, racism, drug/alcohol use within the school grounds etc. And yeah we call lessons periods, and we have five one hour periods, but we used to have six fifty minute periods. I can't think of anything else now :P
2 :
Ermmm..In the UK we all have to wear uniform to school. This can be blazers, polo shirts etc.. some school dress smarter than others & can be extremely strict. A usual school day for me would be starting at 8.45 and then finishing at 3.00 and school starts on Monday & ends on Friday. We do our GCSE's in year 10 & 11 (the last 2 years of compulsive schooling). Umm.. I have 5 lessons a day, if that helps :S And we call each time of the lesson a period..for example a question 'what do we have period three?' that would refer to the 3rd lesson of the day. We have compulsive lessons, Maths, English, Science, Physical education (Gym), Religious studies and Social Education. Before the start of year 10 we get to choose 4 lessons to take for GCSE and add to to the compulsive lessons. We are also put into tutor groups from year 7 and we stay in that tutor group all the way to year 11. Well, I can't think of anything else at the moment but if I come up with anything else I'll come & edit :D Good luck with your story :) Alsooo, In year 11 you can become a prefect, this means that they have control over the other students and will look after the year 7's at break and lunch. There is also a school council..2 members of each tutor, a girl and a boy will go to meetings once a term and discuss what the students in their tutor want for the school, with the other members of council and their head of year. In year 11 there is an election for head boy & head girl, once the votes have been verified and noted they will be in charge of the council meetings.

Entrance to medical school, A level requirements in the UK, please help!

Entrance to medical school, A level requirements in the UK, please help!?
I'm in year 11, my last year of secondary school, and very soon will need to be chosing which subjects to study at A-Level. Ultimately, i wish to do medicine, so i will be taking chemistry and biology, but I'm just wondering as to whether or not i would be at a disadvantage if i didn't carry Mathematics onto A Level. Is there a less chance of me getting onto a medical course? Do univeristies prefer mathematics? P.S. I'm expected an A* at GCSE, if this makes any difference?

The sciences are good for getting into medicie. I see math is good to. Your definatly benefit from biology above all. CREED
2 :
I'm going down the same path. General, you need an AAB as A2, and this includes Chemistry, Biology and another Maths/Science based subject. I'm currently in AS, and I'm doing Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths, so I've got two options then and there. Maths isn't essential, but helpful. Try looking at prospectuses for universities; I did. :]

USA and UK high school - differences

USA and UK high school - differences?
hey guys. i was just curious as to the differences in American High schools and British ones. Obviously we finish in year 11 (10th grade i think). and have to wear uniform, but anything else? I'm 17 and in 6th form doing my A levels. Also, does anyone know of any exhange programs with American and British high schools? thanks :) x

You have A- Levels and GSCE's as I am told. In America there is no set national test to graduate from high school. Also there are no real qualifications for university study only subjects that universities would like to see on your transcript. We have the SAT's and the ACT's. Most colleges require one or the other but some do not require either. I think Youth for understanding has a program and there are others. Here's the YFU website http://www.youthforunderstanding.org/

Year 11 = last year of high school (secondary school) Unless there's a sixth form, (year 12) 14 year olds = Years 9/10
2 :
In year11 you are aged 15/16. Year11 is your last compulsory year of education in the UK.
3 :
Year 11 is the last year of compulsory education in the UK, students in this year group are generally 15 & 16 although in certain circumstances children may be held back or put forward a year or two. So it is uncommon to find a 14 year old in year 11 .
4 :
You are in the last year of high school, and will have less than a year left (year 11 is much shorter than other school years). However, the government has introduced a new scheme to keep kids in education so if you're of a certain age (NOT ME THOUGH, HAHAHA) you will have another three years. It is not common to have someone younger than 15 in year 11. It's more common to have people who should be in the year above in a year below that. I didn't even know they let kids go up years. Do you get to do that?? If you're immigrating to the UK, you will probably be placed in the year below than what you should be. A lot of my polish friends should be in college right now if they were in Poland, but they're stuck being in year 11 with me this year instead. :)
5 :
Its the last year you have to do. It is impossible to be 14, you have to be 15 or 16. In the UK you dont generally advance or get but back a year.

Should Prince Michael open a "finishing school" in the UK

Should Prince Michael open a "finishing school" in the UK?
Supposedly, it was the Queen Mother who put Diana "through the paces"...now that she is dead, wouldn't Prince Michael be a great person to help "finish" upper class young ladies, and also commoners like Kate Middleton who might aspire to marriage with a UK royal?
Royalty - 4 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Sounds a bit drastic - finishing school? Do you mean in the sense of 'thumb on the blade, blade in the horizontal plane, thrust up under the ribs?' Maybe not - in my experience finishing school types did the same thing, but psychologically. So perhaps that's exactly what the Rentakents should do!
2 :
If Prince Michael of Kent is not too busy acting as a go-between for Russian trade interests, he could profit from opening a finishing school for nouveau riche "princess want-to-be's" that features an abbreviated course in finishing. After all, the Duke of Kent's expertise is preferable to that of Lady Diana Spencer's butler, Paul Burrell, who appeared on the "Australian Princess" and "American Princess" reality television shows. That said, apparently the Queen Mum's role in tutoring the Princess of Wales to be was over stated at the time of the Royal Wedding. If Prince William is truly interested in marrying Kate Middleton, no doubt she is being groomed behind the scenes.
3 :
No....just because Diana now dead....this not good reason why glorious Queen Mother must stop give help....regard finish off person. * Of course....if Prince Michael wish open own "finishing school"....cannot stop. This called competition. Perhaps He do good job....perhaps not.
4 :
If Kate Middleton wants to marry Prince William, then I expect she will get a lot of advice about her behaviour, duties etc before she marries him. Personally,if she asked me, I would advise against it, I can imagine nothing more boring myself than marrying into the royal family. But it's her choice.

Are the engineering universities in the UK alot harder to get into than in the United States?
People are saying that to transfer to a UK university to study engineering you have to have extremely good grades. In the United States you can have somewhat decent grades , like several C's and still be able to transfer to a pretty good university that offers an engineering degree. Are there any schools in the UK where this is possible ? So in the UK are the university acceptance procedures totally different? You will need to enquire of the individual UK universities what their requirements are for the engineering programs. Usually on their websites the universities will show what sort of GPA and so on are required for international students.

The whole organization of the school system (say from age 11 upwards) is different in the UK and US. You will probably find that UK first degrees (BSc or BEng) start at a higher level than US first degrees. They are often more narrowly focussed as well. The UK doesn't have the same system of "majors and minors" in first degrees that the US has. In the UK it is quite normal to go straight from a first degree to a PhD, without any "masters" or "grad school" stage in between. You might well find that "average" US grades that would be get you onto a US degree course are not enough for an "average" UK degree, simply because you would be starting from a point 6 or 12 months behind where the "average" UK student would have reached before starting a university course.. I'm talking about so called "Russell Group" of about the 20 or 30 top UK universities here. For Engineering, that would include Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London, Manchester, Nottingham, Sheffield, York, Warwick, Swansea, Southampton, etc). The previous UK government (which was kicked out 6 months ago) had a policy of "wider access to degree level courses", and part of that policy was to rename many second and third tier colleges as "universities" so they could award "degrees" as opposed to other qualifications, but without actually changing what they taught. So beware of relatively new UK "universities" with apparently low entry requirements - you might finish up on a third-rate course with a worthless piece of paper at the end of it.
2 :
I would expect that there are far fewer engineering colleges in the UK than in the US. That alone would make them seem tougher to get into.

The most prestigious one is RADA, the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. If you get a qualification at RADA, you can usually work anywhere!

Everyone thinks that RADA is the best drama school. I suggest it is one of the best. Going to RADA guarantees you no more work than anywhere else. Each school has its own methods of teaching and not every way suits every student. I have linked you to the National Council for Drama Training which has a list of accredited drama schools. You might find that there is a really good drama school not far from where you live. Look under the section marked 'Students'. The National Youth Theatre is not a drama school. It does, however run a number of short courses.

After school detention in the UK

After school detention in the UK?
Hi everyone.... I attend school in the UK, i am in year 10 (15 yrs old). last week i was given an after school detention for 2 hours (3.30 til 5.30) for skipping class. The head of year Mr poole gave me the detention which took place in room 7, english classroom. i was the only person in detention, and had to write lines as my punishment, which is really, really boring!!! The teacher told me if i didnt complete at least 5 sides of A4, then i would have another detention the next day! we have to wear school uniform for detentions. so i got to the classroom, sat at the desk, got my pen out and started to write my lines. i managed to get through 6 sides of lines come 5.30. i handed my papers to the teacher, and made my way home. what are your detentions like? Any ideas on a good pen to use in detention when writing lines?? (my hand started to hurt after a while).... x-amy-x

I think you need to make sure that all the following processes were followed. Firstly, did the School tell your parents that you were to be held back for two hours, and did they give them 24 hours notice? (a legal requirement). Secondly, is your Head of Year aware that the writing of lines is, at the very least frowned on, and at worst is possibly illegal? I wonder if it is your school's policy to insist on the writing of lines. Can they justify such a time-wasting activity? Why were you not required to complete the work you should have done in the lesson you skipped? One thing is certain, and that is that you could NOT be given a further detention for not completing a set number of lines during the detention. If that had happened your parents would be within their rights to refuse to allow you to sit that detention. Perhaps you should have gone to the lesson after all.....!

What Kind of parent sends a kid to school in the summer.... The summer is for relaxing and gettting away from school for kids, Send her when Summer is over. School are CLOSED in the summer....Well most of them. I think some private schools are open all year long. Sorry I don't have any info about school in the UK, I live in the U.S. Try asking this in Yahoo Answers UK, NOT USA. Maybe that will help. Go all the way down in the Yahoo Answers page where it says Yahoo answers International and click on United Kingdom.

Teenage / School Freedoms - US/UK

Teenage / School Freedoms - US/UK?
Personally familiar with school in Germany, the UK and the US, but it's been many years. Upper middle class suburban. I do remember that in Germany and in the UK (where I'm originally from), there were far more freedoms for teens compared to the US. Specifically, in the US grades 11 and 12, I felt like I was in prison...because it is really is a bit like a prison. The equivalent is upper sixth form or (basically) college in the UK or Germany, and you are basically treated like an adult. Because of this, the teen society is/was very, very different compared to the US. You can guess which I resented, and which I was fine with. Are things any different now? My experience was back in the 80s.

No, things are the same in the US. I agree with you on the freedom part, it's like everything is predetermined for you. People are very immature and quite frankly need to grow up. Most people in my US high school act as if knowledge is poison and confused on what maturity is.

independent boarding school in the uk?
i've been looking to go abroad, and i need some help. what are some good independent boarding schools in the uk? so far, i've visited the edinburgh academy..its ok. i also like ampleforth college (york), strathallan, glenalmond, and a couple others, what are some really good ones with good academics and good theatre/arts departmetns? thanks

The best resource I've seen for UK schools is the Good Schools Guide (which you can get at Amazon). It has a quirky but reasonably accurate description of each school and gives you a good idea of the strengths and weaknesses of each. Do you want co-ed or single sex? Do you want religious (if so, which one)? Do you want IB? Or are you principally interested in academic results? You can check league tables in the major newspapers (try the Times or Guardian online education section). Some independent schools also have Ofsted reports (which are thorough and give an excellent indication of what the inspectors think the school does well and could do better). On a more specific note, I've only heard good things about Ampleforth recently...
2 :
don't go to glenalmond! people there are bunch of posh snobs who cant get over themselves!! i went to kilgraston ( like right next to strath ), if u want good academic ,go there however if u r a guy you cant go there cos its an all girl school. i myself are moving to strathallan next year ( cos my bro goes there ) i think their facilities are quite good...

Availability of Homosexual/Bisexual/Crossdress/Transgender rights in UK schools

Availability of Homosexual/Bisexual/Crossdress/Transgender rights in UK schools?
I need information of the rights and common rules effecting people who are Homosexual, Bisexual, Cross-dressers and Transgender in schools in the United Kingdom. Could anyone provide information on where to get these details, or the details themselves? Thank you :)

There are no specific rights afforded to the groups you list in school. The only ones that apply are those which apply to everyone, but as the rights apply to adults, and school children are 16 and under, they carry little weight
2 :
Gay rights are the same as straight people rights. i don't see why it should be any different.
3 :
There the same rights as heterosexuals, but if you mean about teaching homosexuality in schools, i'm not sure today. When i was taught about it it lasted about 1min and basically told if your gay you will get aids, that was in the 90's. No wonder it took me ages to come out, the teachers frighten you to death :-)

Dubai International Academy (Approx AED 30,000 - AED 55,000) Cambridge and Wellington follow the IGCSE Curriculum and Emirates International School and Dubai International Academy follow the IB Curriculum. What would happen if I did my first two years of High School in the USA, then sixth form, then back to the US

What would happen if I did my first two years of High School in the USA, then sixth form, then back to the US?
What would happen if I did my first two years of High School in the USA, then sixth form, then back to the US for going to a university? would that mean i didn't complete highschool? Is that even do-able? Could somebody suggest how i could go to boarding school in the UK at the age of 17 for ONE year, and after that go back to the states for my final year of high school? How would i go about that?

Check into an exchange system. There are lots of exchange programs out there these days, if it is just something you want to experiment rather than your parents moving for just a year. You should also be asking these questions to your school counselor and to the college of your choice to see what the differences are and what you need to do to be considered a graduate. Lots of foreigners come to America to go to school, so there has to be equivelancy procedures. Just ask your High school counselors and the college you want to go to.
2 :
A-Levels aren't generally recognized in America. So it'll be pretty pointless. You'll be left with no High School diploma and you'd have done AS Level which is worthless in America. To be able to do this you will need to do IB which is recognized in both America and the UK. Which would mean you could do one year in the UK and the rest in America and use it to apply for University in the US. To apply for boarding school in the UK you'll need to find a boarding school and have enough money to pay for the tuition fees and the housing fees and they'll generally accept you. Oh and you may need a visa.
3 :
It really depends on your high school. Talk to a counselor. Yes, I. B. will work, but there may be other options.

Hi Ritzz, Education in UK is incredibly expensive by normal standards. There are few scholarships offered to international students studying in the UK, and even those are often small in sum. The vast majority of international students fund their studies in the UK by their own means or via a government/private scholarship. Find out if there are any local scholarships where you live that will fund your studies in the UK.

Pharmacy school in the UK from a Canadian high school

Pharmacy school in the UK from a Canadian high school?
Hey, I'm currently in grade 10 in Canada, but I want to go to the UK for university..most likely for pharmacy school. When I began looking up universities in the UK, I was kind of confused.. For example, if I want to do pharmacy school in the UK, do i go straight into it from high school? How many years in total would it take if i was to become a pharmacist in the UK straight out of high school? Any help or information would be appreciated! Thank you in advance! =]

Yes... You may get into Pharmacy school in Uk directly from a canadian high school. Some Uk university look for 68% in chemistry and one more science course, while others look for 80-90%.... and its a 4 yr course with 1 yr of internship. But please keep in mind. Pharmacy school in Uk is very expensive, its about 150 000 dollar (school fees, living, travel, food for 4 yrs) . If your family is with high income, you may go. thats amount is a credit line of medical doctor in canada. If your parents are willing to spend money on you for fun, then yea sure. Also, after finishing your course in Uk... you need to go through a lot of process to get your degree transfer to canada. Examination fees ($2000), exam, permit + permit fees. Province exam as well... (IF), you passed those exam then you may work in canada. Also the salary of pharmacist is about $90 000 - $100 000 in canada, but in uk its $54000(thats if ur a professional pharmacist.) Annual Income * Newly qualified pharmacists can expect to earn between £19,200 and £25,000 ($24 000 - $38000) * Experienced pharmacists can expect to earn around £35,000 * Specialists and consultants can earn between £35,000 and 63000 (specialist is if you passed with first class honor, and go do doctorate degree in pharmacy, then you can expect $54000 - $90000) still our canadian salary is double, as you finish pharmacy school in canada, you earning is $90000, with just master of pharmacy. but in uk, you need to pass M.pharmacy with honors, then doctorate to earn $90 000 . Master of pharmacy - 4 yrs with 1 yr internship. Doctor of pharmacy - 1-2 yrs. The same way, we dont take international students for medical studies in canada, we give priority to canadian citizen and PR; am sure your smart to understand, in term of job outlook, we may not give priority for an international degree, than a canadian degree. Hope thats help :)

yeah why not? im not hindu but indians are certainly extremely friendly and are very caring ppl. Their faith also goes back a long long way and they are very community based . And they have sooo many festivals, kids would have a ball! :P
3 :
Sure. I'd rather send my child to a Hindu school than any other faith - and I'm Jewish! Hindus have lovely, peaceful beliefs. Peace.
4 :
Faith schools are an abomination and should be illegal. A government that allows faith schools should be whipped every time they hear the word segregation.

No. Not being Hindus, I see no reason. And you should have a lot of hesitation towards something brand new that might turn out to be a crap school.

You shouldn't have any problem as soon as you learn the language.... Thus, when we speak of "New York English" as a variety of English, we are referring to a composite of the various forms spoken there. Similarly, if we can identify a New Yorker from his or her speech, we are using at least some of the features which collectively help distinguish New Yorkers from other Americans. http://www.ic.arizona.edu/~lsp/Northeast/NewYorkEnglish/NewYorkEnglish.html **************************** **************************** And the native police culture as it deviates from the UK.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HqOiejxdEWA

I don't know about NYPD, but most places that I have seen in the U.S. require citizenship for hiring. This is a quote from my last Department regarding being hired: CITIZENSHIP: Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien who is eligible and has applied for citizenship. I would expect this is fairly common across the U.S. (though I am sure there are exceptions to this somewhere) Good luck to you.
3 :
No.. In order to be an NYPD officer you have to be a US Citizen.

Boarding school in the UK-6th form and other q's.ASAP

Boarding school in the UK-6th form and other q's.ASAP?
I need help with this, because I'm not very familiar with the whole British educational system. So the thing is - I live outside the UK, and I will be starting my 11th year of High School now... My problem is that I will probably go to Uni in the UK, but I want to take A-levels before I do, because this is the requirement of some top universities and I believe that studying in English will help me later in Uni. The thing is: will I be able to finish my 12th year(last year) in the UK at a boarding school in order to take the A-levels?I mean, will the school accept me for the last 1 year of school? I'm extremely hard-working and I adapt very quickly, I study 24/7 and I'm sure that I will cope with the material in English (I study in another language now).. Meanwhile, this year I will be taking IELTS and hopefully will manage to get a high score.. Besides, I really hate living where I do, and I have always wanted to go to live in England. I'm working on my "boarding school research" now to find a decent school with decent teachers. I've came across with Cambridge Centre for Sixth-form Studies- does anyone know something about this school? I figured that it's a 6-form only which is good and they also help you adapt to the Uni independent life. It is really important that I get some advice...please. And I will be grateful if you can recommend me some other good boarding schools. I also liked Stover School? And the reviews about it are very good. Is it possible to study only 1 year for the A-levels? I'm willing to study hard and i can. To make things clear- can my 6th form be 1-year and not 2-year long?

as far as i'm aware, u must to as levels before you can be accepted into the final year of 6th form. so to explain, in year 12 (lower 6th) you do as levels and in year 13 (upper 6th) you do a-levels. in order to enter the final year, you need specific grades to continue to a levels in your as levels. so in response to your question you would be better off doing both 6th form years in the uk or doing as levels where you are and then transferring. if i were you, i would contact specific schools just to make sure.
2 :
You can't study A level in one year. A levels are broken down into two parts AS & A2)

stay in the UK.
2 :
go back, it will probably be cheaper for you , the social life will be better , and your degree will be equally good
3 :
It depends on where you live eventually. The UK can (sometimes) be kinda snobby about where you were educated, and the US even more so. It also depends on what you want to study too! Degrees in Oz are very good, you will have a good way of life and probably be cheaper. Also if you plan to live overseas after you graduate you can probably avoid paying back HECS debt (if you have one) or pay back what you want. I lived in the UK for 5 years, it is VERY expensive as I'm sure you know. Another option would be to study in the US, financially this can sometimes be better (I dont know your financial situation) but if you are not well off, then in the US you can always earn good money waiting tables while you study, wheras in Oz and UK the money doing this is not as great. Good luck
4 :
The education you get in Australia is one of the best. It is also so much cheaper than the UK and you aren't expected to frink so much (unless you are studying engineering!). Think about your future and whether it would be better to go to a really great uni in Oz, or a less great uni in the UK. I mean if you end up in Aberyswyth in Wales, it may be better to go to a really great Aussie uni!

There's Guitar Lessons in Wimbledon (first link below) for lessons on everything from the basics to improvisation to performance, and they have good reviews. ABC Music has closed their Wimbledon location, and refer folks to the next nearest store, from their website (link 2 below). The All in London online directory may be of assistance; one never knows... You might also try searching using the terms: luthier, repair, stringed instrument making if that's the direction you're going.

Hi Maria, I am not sure what you mean by transfer to live in the US. If you graduate medical school in the UK without experience working in OB or pediatrics then enter the US as a doctor will most likely be difficult for you. Reason being, US has a different system and it will be, for the most part, up to the state that you want to practice if your qualifications are sufficient for you to work as a doctor in your chosen field. This will may mean that you attend 1 - 2 years of medical school and / or do a residency before you can work. Best advice would be to speak with the American Consulate about working as a doctor in the US. Also speak with the appropriate licensing board in the state that you want to work as a doctor and ask will they accept a medical degree from the UK.
2 :
You can go to a foreign medical school, but you MUST do a residency program in the U.S. to practice in the U.S. However, it is more difficult to get into a U.S. residency program if you are coming from a foreign medical school. If you keep you're options open, this route is possible. If you can get into a U.S. medical school, it would be easier for you in the long run though.

King's Rise School in Birmingham is one of the few secondary schools where this kind of punishment took place. There were, however, male teachers who used implements other than canes on girls' bottoms. Several were prosecuted. Among them were Robin Peverett, O.B.E. of Dulwich Preparatory School; John Guise of Helston Grammar School and Colin 'Punishment Kit' West of St. Aiden's School, Carlisle.
