Are teachers allowed to search school bags without the pupils permission or if the school don't have a warr

Are teachers allowed to search school bags without the pupils permission or if the school don't have a warr?
I go to a school in the UK, and hoodies have been banned. Can the school teachers, legally, search the pupils bags and confiscate any non-school uniform without their permission? I thought the teachers had to have a warrant?

at the school I teach at if we see the kids acting odd we do search we first ask the principal then we do and at the end of the day we tell the parents.
2 :
yep, teachers now have the powers to perform body searches too. This is in line with the anti-knife war;///// http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/6704563.stm
3 :
in the U.S its like this if the principal has a suspicion he can go through your locker bag but not your person he cant touch you only a police officer you can ask for one if you dont consent beacuase even though you are on school grounds you still have rights dont know how it is over their but this is how its here
4 :
a warrant lol, no they don't need that but however they can't go into ur bag without ur knowledge.......they can tell u to open it but if they feel ur a treat to the school and ur some dumb sick stupid kid with a weapon then yep they have the right to search b/c it's their job to protect all other kids btw teachers are awesome and u won't know it now, until ur older then
5 :
in my oppinion i would say no....but the teachers would have to be pedifiles to want to body and cavity search kids
6 :
No, they don't have to have a warrant. Remember, you are on government property as long as you are in school and as such, you are under their care and protection. If the teacher decides that you may have "illegal" things on your person or in your locker, they can search for and confiscate them. It's up to you to know what you can or can't bring into school.
7 :
They cannot, and you can report them

My school takes a trip to South Africa every year?
Yes, well i live in the UK. My school recently made a connection with a school in South Africa, my question is.. What do you think the chances of the school getting caught up in crime? For example, a car jacking or mugging? I personally don't care if anything like that was to happen, after all they always pick the self righteous little teachers pets to go, most of them probably don't even know where South Africa is! (No Joke) Just wondering.. They are going next year. They are going to Cape Town.

It depends on where the school is situated. If it is an English school in the southern suburbs like SACS or Bishops you guys will be fine. The same goes for Afrikaans schools in the Boland like Paul Roos or Paarl Boys High. If the school is in a township or on the Cape Flats, it is however a completely different story. Nyanga has on of the highest murder rates in South Africa and Manenberg is renowned for its gangsterism problem. If the school is in an area like Langa, Hanover Park, Gugulethu, Khayelitsha, Manenberg, Nyanga or Mitchell's Plain, your school will need the help of the locals to make sure they stay safe.

How can I succeed in school

How can I succeed in school?
I am in secondary school in the UK. Year 9 to be exact. So far I have been a so-so student but I lacked motivation. I have decided that I want to study classical history and archeology at university, Preferably somewhere such as Oxford although I understand it is very difficult to get into Oxford but I am up for hard work. As I said I lack motivation and was wondering if you have any study tips or ways to help me succeed in my school. I am already in a top set class. Thanks.

can i transfer from and american high school to a british boarding school as a junior?
I'm just starting my sophomore year in high school in America and I'm considering going to a boarding school in the UK, but I've been looking stuff up online and found out there are certain tests and preparations for exams that usually start earlier than your junior year and I'm wondering if I have to do anything, like take special tests, to transfer.

No you don't. Americans are smarter.
2 :
I wouldn't. I mean from a purely academic perspective I came from a New Zealand private school on a british curriculum and I went into 7th grade here. It was really different, Maths is weird, i had heaps to catch up on and in other stuff i was years ahead. It's not that fun being the foreign kid and you'll be living it everyday in boarding school. I mean if you hate your school why don't you transfer to a US boarding school. There are tests you have to take (I cant remember what they are) and you have you have a guardian in the country/area.. Sorry, I know this doesnt really answer your question,I just thought I'd warn you. PS. This is assuming your american and been schooled in US your whole life.

I am Greek. I would like to know if there is any possibilty that I could work in a primary school in the UK with a 2:1 Bachelors in English Literature? Any foreigners who work as teachers in the UK, please share your experience! Is it easy to be a teacher there? What is the application procedure? What are the requisites? Should I forget about it? First, are you an American or British citizen? If American, it may be difficult to get a work visa to live in the UK. From my experience, American degrees are respected as long as they come from reputable schools and the person has a decent GPA. Many UK jobs ask for a candidate's GPA, which doesn't happen in the States as far as I know.

Ive been researching about online home-schooling (because my parents both work) My mum is considering it if i can find the correct sites and information. but all the sites are american. To be honest it's not a big thing over here. If you want to take GCSEs there are some companies that do them online, but on the whole the parents who want their children to follow a school at home model either teach them themselves or hire in tutors. If you have a specific reason for not going to school, e.g. medical problems, bullying, you really hate it ;-) your school/LA might be able to sign you up with NotSchool http://www.notschool.net/
3 :
The British online schools are, in no particular order, Inter High @ http://www.interhigh.net First College @ http://www.firstcollege.co.uk The British e-school @ http://www.briteschool.co.uk North Star @ http://www.northstaruk.org . All go as far as year 11, Inter High and North Star both go right through to A Levels and the British e-school is planning to start Pre-Us (Upper 6th exams similar to A Levels). They're all private schools, think school fees of around £2,000 a year. North Star is a Christian school. If your mum baulks at the idea of paying school fees you might try pointing out that she'd no longer have to buy your school uniforms or pay for your lunches or bus fare so online school may not cost her that much more than the money she's already paying out on the hidden costs of sending you to a state school! The only online school that doesn't charge school fees is 'Not School' (it's run by the Inclusion Trust and your fees would be paid for you by your local authority) but as Firebird pointed out the school is only open to kids who, for one reason or another, are no longer able to go to a 'normal' school .

I'm in year 10 at school in the UK, what grade would I be in America?

You would be a sophomore in high school.
2 :
Depending somewhat on the month the child was born in most children start first grade at age 5 or 6. They go to kindergarten the year before 1st grade. Hope that helps. By the way, welcome and we hope you like it here.
3 :
Sophomore = 10 (Just starting High School) Junior = 11 Senior = 12 Some High Schools have 9 thru 12th yr. 9 would be a (starting) Freshman. At least that's how it was in N.Y., where I grew up.
4 :
You would be in the 10th Grade which is a sophomore.Welcome to the United states we hope you enjoy your stay.
5 :
Oh wow! I'd love to live in America!! Anyways, I think you'd be Grade 9? I don't know! Anyways, have fun in America, it's such a fun-looking place. =]
6 :
that most likely if uk is like us it would be grade 9
7 :
10th Grade.. =] Have a good time @ you new school =]]
8 :
I'm a 10th grader in America and since you were born in July 1993, you would most definitely be a freshman (9th grade). Everyone in my grade was either born in 1991 or 1992. Have fun here!
9 :
Since you were born in 1993, you'd be a freshman.
10 :
It depends what class if you have taken in the U.k. if most of them match up as a freshmen you probably a freshmen (9th) but lets says most of the class you have taken our like 10th grader class you probably will be in the 10th grade I am sure thou your parents will have some say (you may have to take some test or something depending on school district)

I am an American journalism student and would love to go to the UK for internship. First moves?
I still have 2 plus years of schooling to complete, but how is the job market in London for part time work while I complete school? How do UK employers view Americans? Would a citizen of the UK get a job before me? I have never been to Europe, so any advice would be much appreciated.

journalism in the UK is VERY competitive my daughter is a journo student here in Scotland, and sounds like she is in the same year as you strangely enough her work experience time next year will be spent in the USA and not London so perhaps that tells you how the situation is They wont employ a UK citizen over you if you are better qualified, in the UK, the best person gets the job, no matter what their origin perhaps contact the uni's here asking about internships, as exchanges are common place ask at your own, they usually arrange it you will find living in London VERY expensive however, not only compared to the USA, but to the rest of the UK lots of homework for you befor you make the move the UK media industry is awesome however, and you would enjoy it very much dont let anything i have said put you off, but you do need a realistic picture of how it is if you need or want any info, give me a shout i'm know my daughter will help if she can
2 :
Have an angle. What can you bring to the table as a journalist that someone living in the UK can't? What's your unique selling point? Think about these things, then look online and send some emails to editors of UK publications - starting with local newspapers and working up to the broadsheets. Have ready some copy that you've already written tailored to the particular "house style" of the publication you are writing for. Perhaps begin on a freelance basis from the States, sending off query letters and ideas for articles to UK magazines - that way you'll have an "in" with the publication before asking for an internship. If you want it enough then you WILL succeed, but it is fiercely competitive - I tried to be a freelance journalist for two years back in 2006 and couldn't - but I am a bit old and talentless! ;) Best of luck.
3 :
scholarships.onlinewebshop.net - I found such internship info here. It has lots of internships, job openings and scolarships for college students.

What is an internship? This is not a word that is used in the UK.

It's 'grammar', and most have sixth forms (year 12 and 13) so for most of them it's 18 after A-levels. However you can leave at 16 (though not for much longer, the kids in year 7 at the moment have to stay onto 17 and the year after that it will be 18, which will become the compulsory age).

Normally it is cheaper to enroll directly into a foreign university. I know this holds true in France. If you decide to study abroad for more than 3 months (90 days) you will have to get a student visa. Obtaining a visa is a long process- so start well in advance. I work for a new travel/study abroad website that's dedicated to helping students go abroad. It's called Gulliver (http://www.gullivergo.com). You can search more than 2,000 programs in over 70 countries. Check out these UK programs (http://bit.ly/JsNpv). You can compare prices as well. Before you travel, check out our Prepare to Go section (http://www.gullivergo.com/prepare-to-go) to learn about funding, scholarships, housing, internet, visas, and other tidbits for your trip. We also have a discussion forum (http://www.gullivergo.com/discuss) where you can connect with students who are currently abroad or have recently returned home. Good Luck and Happy Travels!

How do i maximise my chances of getting into the best medical schools in the UK

How do i maximise my chances of getting into the best medical schools in the UK?
Besides getting the grades (which I am already working on.. Studying in my own time, going to the central library after school for a couple of hours almost every day).. What else can I do to maximise my chances of getting into let's say, Imperial College or Cambridge?
Higher Education (University +) - 1 Answers

Rather than suggest specific things that you could do to pad your resume, let me offer some overall tips: 1) The basics To begin any pre-med resume, you have to have the things that most medical schools expect a pre-med to have done. They want to see that you have done community service, because this shows that you are interested in helping others and have compassion. They want to see that you have had leadership experience, because you will be in charge of a number of nursing, techs, etc, and good leadership is necessary when you are dealing with people's health or lives. They want to see that you have done clinical volunteering, so that you have seen doctors and patients interacting and are interested in helping people medically. They want to see that you have shadowed doctors (probably less important than the volunteering), so that you have a better grasp of what you are getting yourself into. I personally would recommend at least one year of clinical work or volunteering. It would be best if you started this year no later than your junior year, so that it doesn't ring of last minute resume buffing (salt shaker alert here, this is just the common consensus among pre-meds that I know). If you do your year of volunteering at the beginning of your Freshman year, I would recommend that you punctuate the remaining years with shadowing and short term medical stuff like a blood drive or two, so you don't have to explain why you suddenly stopped all medical related activities. The last "basic" is always useful, but only absolutely necessary when applying to heavy-weight research schools, and that is research. Off the top of my head I believe that 93% of acceptances at U of Michigan were given to students with research experience last year. Similar stats occur at other research schools. It doesn't have to be medically related research, so long as you were part of the creation of new knowledge. Publications are nice, so I would suggest getting started on this early in your undergrad years. Remember, you can list activities that you began before college, so long as you continued them in college. Everything else must be after high school to be most effective. I cannot offer much advice to non-traditional applicants, but I would assume that the rules are a bit more relaxed for you, especially if you were, say, a Fullbright scholar ten years ago. 2) Have something that will make your readers say "Gee, I want to meet this applicant!" There is no such thing as a guaranteed acceptance. I know people who were accepted at Top 10 schools, only to be rejected post-interview from their state school that they were highly competitive at in terms of academics. A 4.0 and a 45T alone isn't going to get you accepted everywhere, though I wouldn't go so far as to say as it wouldn't get you anywhere. For the rest of us mortals, though, extracurriculars are the best way to make ourselves stand out from the pack. As such, have an activity that is really unique, because these things can be quite strong selling points. For me, it was being involved in some post-post-post-post modern dance performances. You have plenty of time to pick up something that is off the beaten pre-med path, so have an interest that isn't what you would normally find in a room full of scientists. There's a reason that the top schools are always telling us how their students are marathon runners, Olympic competitors, composers, singers, and the like. For one, its just plain cool and impressive, and so those are the students they highlight. However, even the students who aren't quite as stand alone as that will often have things that are still pretty interesting to hear about. This desire for interesting applicants occurs at every medical school, and an interesting activity might land you an interview at your dream school. I'm not saying that you should fill your resume with nothing but outlandish activities, but one or two ice breakers will be very helpful. 2) Combine your interests and talents with your activities This goes hand in hand with my first point, but it can really improve your extracurriculars when you combine your activities. Say you go volunteer at the VA or at a hospice, and on the side you take violin lessons. Why not go play your violin at the VA or hospice? If you want to help out a community service, why not run in a charity marathon if you happen to be a runner? Avid painter? Teach a painting class to inner city youth, or paint a mural for a community center. Be creative, it will mean a lot more to the people you help as well as the person reviewing your application. 3) Represent your message If you want to go into academic medicine, research, public health, etc, make sure that you can justify it. If you tell your interviewer that you absolutely love teaching, but you haven't done anything teaching related (according to your resume), you risk making yourself look like you are trying to just be impressive. If you are

It's only acceptable to change schools if someone at your school is violating youngsters' bottoms.
5 :
I would go if I was feeling miserable. and if your family is interested you should definitely go.
6 :
If this is an option for you, I say go for it! Life is too short not to be happy. Just remember, your problems will follow you. So, if you've made any for yourself, rectify them now!
7 :
yes it is ok to move to a different school. i live in the uk and the boarding schools are great here and you will meet new friends that are actually smart and they have great facilities in the boarding schools.
8 :
People are generally the same everywhere, even you. A good boarding school will allow less individual freedom, but will provide you with the opportunity for receiving a better education than most public schools.
9 :
I think you should go for it....if i was in ur situation, i would have left looong ago
10 :
I hate my school, its horrible.but you gotta be strong and put up with it. its just life. unless your being bullierd

Is it okay to move to a better school if you're unhappy in your current school

Is it okay to move to a better school if you're unhappy in your current school?
And you have no close friends, not a wide source of academic students, limited facilities, no activities and you're just feeling miserable at school? Because my family and I are interested in placing me at a Private all-girls BOARDING school in the UK. Is this a good idea, and what are the people like there?

Of course it's okay to move to a better school. Not everyone has that option or opportunity so be glad that you do. Boarding schools can be daunting for some, or liberating for others. I loved boarding school. It taught me a lot about independence, personal responsibility, time management, money management, etc. Some people hate boarding school, while others love it. It really depends on your personality and outlook on life and why you're there and what you hope to achieve there. Some people were sent there against their will, while others chose to go there. Can't really tell you what people are like there because every school is different and everyone is different, so you can't really generalize.

When your 16 and leave school in the UK

When your 16 and leave school in the UK?
Who writes your reference when your in year eleven to allow you go to sixth form colleges? How do they write it, is it just your form tutor or is their individual references from each teacher? I am worried because I get good grades and I am well behaved in all my classes but it is only our form tutor who is horrible to everyone and takes every chance she gets to give people a bad name, she even made me cry today/

hi there make sure you got your visa in place and somewhere to live. It's a total different world over there then you are use too. Wrong side of the Street driving, food, houses..etc..you should really take a visit out there and see what you are in for I moved from canada to the UK loved it but it also takes time to get use use. I loved receiving my canadian gifts from family... my cpt crunch ketchup chips cheese whiz...amazing as the uk it isn't home. I will say the UK is very expensive depending on where yah live. Seems the closer you are to london the more expensive it is. Check out the trains before you go...find out what trains run where. Will it be worth it?,,,,,,,,of course it will not only for yourself but the experience it will bring to your life...I hope this somewhat helps you all the best on your journey

If this is being arranged through your US university exchange, then make sure they are providing housing for you. They will be able to tell you the fees as they are different if you go through your US uni vs applying directly on your own to a university in the UK.

is it not about time the uk closed down all catholic schools

is it not about time the uk closed down all catholic schools?
i think that it is crazy that there are catholic schools in the uk .we pay our taxes ,it goes towards school funding . i do not want to be a donor towards these schools .what do you think.
Religion & Spirituality - 13 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
no!!!!!!!!!!!
2 :
catholic schools are private schools, and paid for by students families and other donations, not taxes. -Christian
3 :
Yes!! Turn them into Christian Schools instead!! <')))><
4 :
I'm American, but I think all religious schools should get no government funding. The UK is a free country.
5 :
The UK is actually close to a majority non-religious. Thank god. As are most European Countries. U.S. will get there one day.
6 :
I don't know, Catholic schools as a whole are not bad. However their problems with accepting new ways of thinking and their steadfastness in not changing with the times makes them dangerous. I believe funding should be cut off for those schools that are against teaching about gay rights and those that may refuse to teach evolution.
7 :
Obvious troll is obvious. Catholic schools = private. Private schools = no school funding. You're drawing blanks, dude.
8 :
As someone who knows a little about the education system in the UK, the sad fact is that the church schools, certainly in london generally provide a far better education than the non church schools. so no, until the other schools clean up their act, let the kids get a decent education first... some of the kids being churned out of local non religious (secondary school) are barely literate. Scary stuff... Once all schools are able to educate students to a decent standard, then you can start thinking about closing the working ones... ****In the uk there are both Church of england and catholic state schools. http://www.cofe.anglican.org/info/education/schools/
9 :
hey wait a minute I went to a catholic school and have fond memories especially since I transferred to public schools and sailed through the next year with out study because I was a full year ahead . and I turned out all right .as a non theistic moral well adjusted individual.
10 :
yeah i agree! All faith schools should be private. The government is taking a backward step by increasing faith schools. Don't think the problem is only on catholic schools although they are the most common. EDIT: Also if you look at the question you will see the mention of the UK....just because religious schools aren't funded by the government in the US doesn't mean that they are not funded by the government in the UK - They are! Also Dark side.....spot on!
11 :
Anthony C is wrong - most catholic schools in the UK DO get state funding. I know - I work in education funding. In my opinion they shouldn't be funded from taxes as Richard Dawkins was right - religious education is tantamount to child abuse. The same goes for anglican schools - there are a lot of those in the UK as well.
12 :
Oh, so let's shut down all the tax-supported institutions that a few people don't like or don't agree with -- including public schools, social services, and public aid. While we're at it, some people don't like paying tax on electricity, gas, and food, so let's do away with them, too. Here's your firewood, donkey, plow, and vegetable seeds. Enjoy!
13 :
Now you are clearly a very ignorant person. Firstly the children that go to a Catholic School are entitled to a Catholic education. Secondly Catholic Schools cost the government less because they're subsidised by their diocese so it would cost more money to send those children to non-Catholic schools. So it would cost the tax payer more and would be nothing but a bigoted act of hatred towards Catholics. Catholic Schools are good school because of their ethos. Don't be under ant illusions as to funding.

Are americans going back to school now

Are americans going back to school now?
I heard that students in the US are getting ready to go back to school, which is funny because we're getting ready to leave/have left for the summer holidays in the UK. Who gets more school holidays? UK OR US Who gets longer summer holidays? UK OR US
Primary & Secondary Education - 7 Answers

1 :
We dont go back to school into September and get out of school in the middle of june. The US has a longr summer vacation
2 :
no, we are about halfway through our summer break, but here in America, the Back-To-School sales start a good month or so before you actually need to get ready to go back to school.
3 :
Barring any hurricanes, my kids will start school in August.
4 :
Yes, some students are going back to school now. It is called "Year round schools" or "Alternative School Year Schedules." Some areas in the US are overcrowded so they stagger start and finish dates to fit all of the students within a certain area into the school. Some schools just started their new year, July 1st; others will begin the first of August. Schools used to begin across the nation (USA) immediately following labor day. This was because families used to need their children help bring in harvests/crops. As we (USA) has become an industrialized nation, and school years have extended, start and end dates have also changed. School years really depend on the State and Region that the youth resides. There are also summer school programs that run for 4-6 weeks.
5 :
ok i live and have taught in both countries. lived the brit system for over 26 years and the Us system for 6 years. as a teacher i go back on aug 4th to do training- then a week later the kids come along the amount of training before school starts and furign the year seems in the uk is much less. the americans seem to have more holidays overall. Who gets more school holidays? US Who gets longer summer holidays? us get exactly 8 weeks for summer, and we startthe vacation earlier int he year . i think timewise thats the same as the british.
6 :
it kinda varries on where you live in America like some go back in the end or middle of September, but where I live I go back like 2 weeks into Aug.
7 :
it varies depending on school. I don't go back until August 25.

I want to attend a University in the UK,and i live in the USA right now.How does the UK system work

I want to attend a University in the UK,and i live in the USA right now.How does the UK system work?
I am planning on going in to medicine. Right now i am currently a sophomore in high school. I understand that in the UK you take your GCSE's, but since i will be taking my SAT's, will some schools still accept that? Would i graduate highschool, and then go to 5 years of medical school in the UK?(Is that how it works, because in the US it is 4 years of college, 4 years of med school). Tell me everything. Tips on getting in to a university? Thanks
Higher Education (University +) - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
iam not sure about sats but you can send your details or contact the university you would like to attend in the future and they wil provide the information that you will need.
2 :
To get into a UK uni, you'll need the SATs plus either at least 3 AP exams, or 3 SAT II subject tests. You'd normally want to take one in bio, one in chem, and one other. The UK unis that I'm familiar with won't admit you into their medicine courses, as the only foreigners they admit into medicine are those from countries where the country's medical schools are inferior. That's hardly the case for the US. So I ask you to check the web pages for medicine for each UK uni you're interested in. See if you even can apply.
3 :
In the UK we have GCSE's which you do in your last year at school (you need to get high grades in all) then you go onto Sixth Form or College for 2 or 3 years studying A Levels, sometimes BTEC's but they aren't accepted for Medicine as far as I know. A Levels is both exam & coursework and BTEC's are more practical such as work experience and coursework. In year 12 we apply through the UCAS website for University where you pick the course you want to go on, to study Medicine in the UK it takes either 5 or 6 years depending on if you pick a course where you work during your degree. Hope I helped, I put the UCAS website down there \/

Transferring children from schools in UK to US

Transferring children from schools in UK to US?
y husband and I are considering moving to America for work reasons. We have two children (age 17 and 14) and we are not sure about the schooling arrangements at this age. I wanted to know for the 17 year old, as the 14 year-olds schooling seems pretty straightforward, what would her best options be? Is it still a legal requirement for her to stay in school? She is a very intelligent, motivated and charismatic young person and is hoping to go to university. The reason we are moving now is because she has just finished compulsory education and would have gone on to an optional sixth form – so now seemed the time for us to move, without interrupting her potential studies. We are not immediately concerned about the 14-year old’s education, as this is not one of her priorities and never has been. Therefore, my question is, when we choose to move, what route do we need to go down for her? How do we we go about enrolling her at a school, which kind of school should we look for and how far through her new school’s term would she be? We are hoping to move in about 3 months, penind the organisation or our home sale.

UK Schools : Time to Abolish the Long Summer Vacation?
Many people have complained about the closure of schools for two days due to the heavy snow. They argue that the closures will harm children's education. Here in the UK we call them 'blackboards'. Strangely they are not all black. Some are green. But they are all called blackboards! Except the boards that are white (for markers) and these are called boards. In the UK we know that the most visible combination is yellow chalk on green boards and that is why in 95% of all classrooms I've been in over 25 years of teaching are black and white chalk is supplied. Life is never simple.

we do have marching bands, but not usually associated with schools ... marching bands are usually independent, after-school activities, much like dance classes, music classes etc are ... often people who want to set up classes hire school premises to run them in so the choice of things to do varies widely across the country ... in my area you can do all sorts of dance from ballet to street, music whether singing or an instrument, martial arts, trampolining, cricket, tennis, football, rugby etc etc, the list is endless

I will also like to know if there is a difference between a letter of invitation and a letter of sponsorship and to whom should that letter be addressed and sent: to me to send later to the embassy with my Form or straight to the embassy?.
